Sally Yost

I do virtually all of my art in nature. Sketchbooks range from small accordion-fold books to larger art-boards carried in a daypack. On car and camping trips, I take along larger boards and canvas for gouache, pastels, or oil.

For over 30 years I have backpacked, hiked and canoed the wildlands of the mountain West. Every picture is an experiment. I have come to realize that there is no “right way” to do a piece. I get the picture going, working quickly. When it starts to take on a life of its own, I have a “visual dialogue” with it, making changes until it can stand on its own. Every time I think I’m hitting my stride, I turn into an excited beginner, fascinated with the materials at hand.

I have benefited from feedback from many artists and teachers: Marvin Schmidt, Dianne Lipscomb, Ron Arthaud, David Goines, Marion Epting, Phyllis Shafer, Gregory Kondos, and Norma Lewis. I have been privileged to study art at the University of Wisconsin, Cambridge Adult School, California College of the Arts, Chico State University and Feather River College.
